PUZZLE PASSION with Yifan Xue

11:00 am - 12:00 pm

 

Puzzles are good for the brain. Studies have shown that doing jigsaw puzzles can improve cognition and visual-spatial reasoning. The act of putting the pieces of a puzzle together requires concentration and improves short-term memory and problem solving. You can work on a puzzle by yourself or you can team with other participants to finish the puzzle. You can also bring your own puzzle here.

 

Movie: Casablanca

3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Each week we will show a movie. This week you will watch Casablanca. It focuses on an American expatriate (Bogart) who must choose between his love for a woman (Bergman) or helping her and her husband (Henreid), a Czech resistance leader, escape from the Vichy-controlled city of Casablanca to continue his fight against the Germans. Bay Ridge ROCKS with Eletra Johansen

2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Bay Ridge ROCKS is a community project that cultivates creativity for young and old. Paint rocks with images, words or quotes and hide them for others to find (or keep them)! The hope is that finders will post a picture or tell where they found it on the Bay Ridge Rocks Facebook page. Then you can see your rock again! It’s a great way to spread a little cheer and positive juju while having fun. All the supplies will be available at CONNECTS.

Meditation & Breathing with Yifan Xue

Studies show that meditation as well as breathing exercises can improve physical and mental health. Meditation and breathing exercises don’t have to take a lot of time out of your day. Yifan will teach you several techniques and you will practice together in the group. After each exercise, you will review and discuss your feelings.

 

Coloring with Yifan Xue

3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Coloring keeps attention flows away from ourselves. It also relaxes the brain. Also, low stakes make it pleasurable. We will color Secret Garden with color pancils. Please feel free to bring your own art supplies!

There are several accessories that can be paired with your smartphone.  In this class we'll  look at a few: speakers, printers, TVs, and watches.  In this class we'll discuss bluetooth the technology that enables the pairing and how it works.).

Poker boosts math skills, logical thinking and more. It is an inclusive game and can be played by anyone. If you are not familiar the rules, Yifan will teach you all you need to know.

Sudoku is a brilliant brain game for people of all ages and abilities. Simply put, Sudoku is a logic game that involves problem solving and looking for number patterns. The skills developed with this game have real-world implications by helping older adults assess the repercussions of decisions that they are faced with every day. As Sudoku is a challenge, completing puzzles can also give a great sense of accomplishment that can be hard to achieve in other activities in later life.

Technology How Tos: Connectivity with David Dring

What does it mean to be connected to the Internet or cloud? What is WiFi? Where can I get WiFi for free? What do I need to do to be careful about with public WiFi? Are there ways to get inexpensive connectivity or reduce my current costs? We'll discuss these topics as well as answer your questions.

Game: Undercover with Yifan Xue

2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

The basics of UNDERCOVER:

• Roles: You can be either a Civilian, an Undercover or Mr.White

• Goal: You must find out the other players’ identities (and yours!) as fast as possible to eliminate your enemies!

• Get your secret word: Civilians all receive the same word, the Undercover gets a slightly different word, and Mr.White gets the ^^ sign…

• Describe your word: One by one, each player must give a short truthful description of their word. Mr.White must improvise

• Time to vote: After discussion, vote to eliminate the person that seems to have a different word from yours. The app will then reveal the eliminated player’s role!
